Don’t learn to live with the mess

Psalm 139:23-24 - “Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” Have you ever had something that broke in your house or apartment or car? And instead of getting it fixed right away, you just let it slide. You fully intended to get to it someday, but never quite got around to it. So you just learned to live with it that way. And after a while, you never even notice it anymore. Sometimes we can do that in our spiritual life. We know we should give serious attention to an area of struggle or compromise, but we never quite get around to it. And after a while we just get used to it being that way. We learn to live with the mess. What should concern us no longer does. In today’s Scripture the Psalmist is warning against that in his own life. He doesn’t want “any wicked way” in him. He doesn’t ever want to be okay with something that God is not okay with. His attitude needs to be our’s. Learning to be okay with pockets of sin in our lives is never good. Being satisfied with something over which we should be grieved is just asking for more trouble. The good news is that we can ask God to do for us what He did for the Psalmist. We can pray today’s Scripture over our own lives. It’s a prayer we can be sure that God will answer - for our good and His glory! Don’t learn to live with the mess.
