“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken spirit and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” - Psalm 51:17. So here you are again. You did that thing you hate. The thing you promised God you’d never do again. And now you are crushed by the guilt of it. You feel awful and start to wonder if you even know Jesus at all. Here is the truth of it: all of us stumble, fail, and at times end up face down in our sin as we walk through life. This, of course, is no surprise at all to Jesus. He knows everything about us - our past, present, future, our struggles, our temptations, our victories - He knows all of it. And when we find ourselves defeated again by another round of sin, He wants us to run to Him, never from Him. The words of the Psalmist in today’s Scripture are supremely encouraging and reassuring. For all those who come to God with a humble heart of confession they find the safest of places. God will “not despise” our brokenness, our struggles, our failed attempts to live for Him. We bow before Him holding out dirty hands and hearts that need His cleansing. Far from offending Him, these are the “sacrifices” that He desires - to acknowledge the reality and weight of our sin. And then to look to Him as the only One Who can forgive and wash us clean. This is what He wants to do and wants us to do. So when sin has had its wicked way with you, don’t sit in the corner of your heart in your shame. Bring it all to the God Who loves you. To the One Who will “not despise” your hurt and your brokenness - ever.
