John 15:5 - “I am the Vine, you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” Ever feel like you’re stuck, spiritually speaking? Treading water, just spinning your wheels, and feeling like you are going nowhere fast? And then, to make matters worse, the enemy of your soul slides right in next to you and whispers those all too familiar words of condemnation: “You are such a disappointment to God. Look at you - you should be so much better by now at being a christian.” The words sting with the “feel” of truth. But here is what is actually true: growth takes time. Look at a small plant day after day and it won’t appear to be doing anything. You won’t see any growth. But look at it one, two, three years later and you can definitely see that growth has taken place. It’s the same with your kids. You see them every day, and you don’t really see much growth. But it is happening. The relatives who only see them once a year will heartily confirm that. Here’s the point. Spiritual growth takes time too. It happens slowly. Just look at the disciples. They were with Jesus in Person for years and still there were plenty of times when they seemed to struggle in the growth department. Here’s the key: as long as we are connected to Jesus, the true Vine, growth will happen. That is the great news and the promise contained in today’s Scripture. Connection to Jesus guarantees growth, even in those seasons when it seems like nothing is happening. So take a moment to honestly assess yourself and your relationship with Jesus. How are you different now then you were a year ago? How about two years ago? Five years ago? The best way to see true spiritual growth is to look at it over time, because it takes time. Ask God to help you see what you can’t. Areas where you’ve grown and some areas where you want to grow more. Be encouraged. God is the Vinedresser, the Great Gardener, and He knows exactly how to help you grow. And best of all, He wants to because He loves you. Fruit is coming. Stay connected
