I John 5:21 - “ Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.” At first glance this seems like a really strange way for John to end his letter. No, “Grace and peace be with you” nor “All of the brothers and sisters here send their greetings”. Nope. Just a straight-forward command about staying away from idols. The reality, however, is that because final words are always important, these words chosen by John under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit are both powerful and life-giving. We all live in a world that is overflowing with potential God replacements - things we look to for meaning, identity, and fulfillment. In other words, “idols”. And if we hook our hearts to anything instead of God, those things will ultimately disappoint us and in the end abandon us. John wants something very different for his readers. He loves them. They are “dear” to him. So his love is seen in the warning. And this warning and instruction comes all the way down to us. “Idols” are subtle, abundant, and life-stealing. Staying far away from them is the best option. Today, take a few moments for the all-important practice of self-reflection. Sin blinds us. Idols deceive us. Pray Psalm 139:23-24. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you if in your heart you have fallen prey to an idol. And if you have, repent and run back to Jesus. He is the only true Author of Life Who will never lie to you, leave you, or selfishly use you. You are forever “dear” to Him. Keep close to Him and you’ll keep yourself away from idols.
