Luke 5:5-6 - “Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’ When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.” Peter was a master fisherman. It was how he made his living - how he kept his bills paid and his family fed. However, this night of fishing had been bad. Awful, actually. They had fished all night and came up completely empty. It wasn’t because of their lack of knowledge or lack of effort. Still, they had nothing to show for it. Imagine their frustration. Their bodies were tired and their nets were empty. Then Jesus comes along and tells them to go back out and try again. Really? Go to the same place using the same equipment with the same technique and now, during the day (the worst time for fishing) - really? Peter responds with both humility and obedience. “But because You say so.” I seriously doubt that Peter was prepared for what would happen next. What made the difference this time? Only one thing. Jesus was in the boat with them. Here’s the truth that was real for them and is real for you and me: when Jesus is with us, anything can happen. Read that phrase again. It is bursting with hope and expectation. As we walk with Jesus and follow His direction things can change. But the key for Peter is the same for us - a humble and obedient response. Even though it made no sense to him, Peter followed through on what Jesus told him. Imagine all that Peter would have missed out on if he had refused Jesus’ instructions. If he would’ve thought that he knew better. So today, keep Jesus in your “boat”. Be near Him through time spent with Him. Listen to what He says in His Word and live it out in humble obedience. And as you do, remember that you are with the One Who has no limits to His power, no boundaries to His influence, and no lack of options for accomplishing His will. Jesus can change anything!
