Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” - Genesis 22:1-2. “Surrender” can be a terrifying word to us. We like control. We like to be in charge, especially when it comes to our lives. The problem is that we bring this attitude with us when it comes to God’s instruction for us as His followers. We think we know better how our lives should go. This, of course, is foolish. God is wiser than us, kinder than us, and knows more than us - infinitely so. Plus, He actually wants more for us than we want for us. To get there, though, requires total surrender on our part. And God knows how to lead us there. It’s what He did with Abraham. God knew that Isaac was in danger of becoming an idol in Abraham’s life - which would have destroyed them both. That’s what idols do - they steal. So God gave Abraham an opportunity to surrender Isaac in total trust. (If you are unfamiliar with the story you can read it in Genesis 22). The situation was never out of God’s control. God is supremely good and wanted only good for Abraham. The result was that one of Abraham’s most faith-filled moments was when he let something go - when he surrendered Isaac completely into God’s Hands. So here is the question: what is your “Isaac”? What is it that God wants you to completely surrender into His Hands? A situation, a dream, a hurt, a burden, an attitude, a relationship, a job - what is your “Isaac”? God’s command to surrender is His heart-felt invitation to experience more of Him and His love. God wants to lead you into an amazing faith-filled moment, just like Abraham. The situation is never out of God’s control. He is good and wants only your good. When it comes to God, surrender is the best place we could ever be.
