The Listening God

Job 38:1 - “Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind.” The book of Job has given incredible comfort and hope to countless christians for its dealings with the tough issue of evil, of why “bad things happen to good people”, and the freedom God gives us to bring all of our raw emotions and brokenness to Him. Today’s Scripture tells us something powerful about God that was not only true for Job but is true for us as well. The book of Job contains 42 chapters and the first 37 of them are mostly about Job and his friends wrestling with Job’s suffering. Then in verse one of chapter 38 God shows up to “answer” Job. Do you see what this means? It tells us that throughout the whole of Job’s wrestling and crying out to God with questions and anger and lament that God was not absent or ignoring him. It’s actually the exact opposite. God was now going to “answer” Job because God had been there listening the entire time. He was not far removed or simply uninterested. God was right there the entire time - totally engaged, totally connected. And the same is true for you and me. God never changes. So whether we find our lives challenged by the ordinary in our every day or we get wrecked by the unexpected awful, God is not absent. He is not uninvolved. He is there, right there, leaning in and listening to our hearts, just like He was with Job. That truth should give us real comfort. So today as you walk through life, remember you follow a God Who is entirely concerned about everything that is happening around you and inside of you. He is listening. He is paying attention. It is Who He is.
