Psalm 19:7a - “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.” Picture this in your mind: it is a blazing hot day and you’ve been working hard out in the sun for hours. Your body is weak, your mind is cloudy, and you feel faint and exhausted. Just then, you spot a massive fountain over at your friend’s house. You remember he said that you could refresh yourself there anytime you wanted. You stagger towards it. As you get closer you see the pure, crystal clear water powerfully cascading down from this fountain. So what do you do? Do you try to get just close enough, hoping to catch a cooling spritz? Do you allow someone else who is fully enjoying the fountain to simply tell you how incredibly wonderful it is? No. You position yourself right under that waterfall and immediately feel its revitalizing wonder. You are joyously drenched and completely satisfied. You are refreshed. What that fountain did for your body God wants to do for your soul. And He has the powerful flow of truth and love and grace from His Word to accomplish it. He wants you to put yourself completely under its rushing joy of satisfaction. We don’t create the “water” - God is the Source. We simply position ourselves in the place to receive it - to be soaked in it. That’s why we bring ourselves to the fountain of His Word every day. To meet with God and be refreshed by Him. And on the hard days, when the best we can do is to just drag ourselves to His fountain and fall down in front of it, weary and exhausted, that will be enough. We come by faith, expecting God’s life-giving flow to reach us. He promises it will. He promises that He will. He promises that His perfect Word will indeed refresh our souls.
