“Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for Me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.’” - John 6:26. In this verse Jesus was cutting right to the heart of the matter with the crowds who had chased after Him. They didn’t run around the lake because they wanted Him. They did it because of what they could get from Him. They wanted another free lunch like He had given them the day before. That was it. Jesus saw through it - so He spoke to it. As I read this story, honestly, I get a lump in my throat. How often has this been me? How often have I chased after Jesus only because of what I thought I could get from Him? I hate when people treat me like that. How much worse when I do it to Jesus? But it’s an honest question for all of us. Do we want Jesus for the perks or because of Who He is - because we love Him for Him? This is no small matter. How we see Him will determine how we will be with Him. A few verses later Jesus settles the issue: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). He came to satisfy the deepest needs of our soul with true “life”. Jesus was letting them - and us - know that He is far more than just a meal ticket. He is the only thing on the table - the only thing on the menu. So the question remains: is He alone enough for us? Why are we chasing Him? If it’s to get to Him, to be with Him, to know Him, to experience His massive love, and to love Him in return - then there is great news. He wants us and we can have Him. Like the old hymn says, “All other ground is sinking sand.” Simply Jesus.
