So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” - I Corinthians 10:31. When the time came to announce the birth of Jesus, the angels didn’t go to kings or princes or to the would-be movers and shakers of the day. No, they went to a group of shepherds. And while today we tend to romanticize the shepherds in the Christmas story, reality wasn’t so kind. In the first century the vocation of shepherd was not anything anyone aspired to. They weren’t considered part of polite society. They were required to take care of their flocks outside of the city limits and their job was often hard and thankless. But by choosing to announce the birth of Jesus to shepherds, God was proclaiming that the Savior of the world was a Savior for all classes and all kinds of people - not just for the rich and famous and the well-connected. And God was telling us just what kind of a Savior Jesus would be, for one of the terms used to describe Jesus is “Shepherd”. And think about this - by identifying Himself as “Shepherd” Jesus took a lowly and culturally disrespected vocation and breathed honor into it. And that is exactly what He does with each of our lives as well. As we choose to live faithfully unto Him in “whatever we do”, He breathes eternal significance into it - into all of it. So whether at home, at an office, in the classroom, or wherever and whatever we are doing, the Great Shepherd tells us that every move we make for Him matters. You;ve got His Word on it. Such is the awesome grace of our Savior!
