“The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who put their trust in Him.” - Nahum 1:7. This coming Sunday we will officially launch our new church. The truth is that starting a church was never part of my plan for my life. I saw things going in a completely different direction. But two years ago when my plan got completely blown up, what was a total gut-punch of a shock and surprise to me was none of that to God. He knew all along what was coming for me and the track it would lead me to. And that’s the point for all of us. God sees your way, He knows your path, and He is overseeing all of it. To be sure, at times what He allows is hard, mysterious, and completely confusing. There are seasons when it feels like He is silent and maybe that He has abandoned us. It will even appear that what He promises and what He gives is at odds - that the worship songs we sing are detached from the reality we are living. The fact is - and this is so important - that these experiences are really the normal christian life lived out in a broken world. What we can not do, dare not do, is to let our hard and confusing circumstances twist the truth of Who God is. The Scripture declares that He is “good”. That means His intentions for you and His directions to you are always and only good. It means that when you run face-first into something you never saw coming and never wanted, He is still at work in it and through it and over it for your good. His heart’s desires towards you will never be anything but good. So for me, as I step into this new, unexpected, exciting, and also somewhat terrifying season of starting a church I grab onto this truth and hang on with everything I’ve got: God is good. That is where true rest and peace and fuel for living is found. And when you grab onto this truth for yourself, you’ll find that your Heavenly Father has been holding onto you all along!
