What we delight in will drive our desires

Psalm 37:4 - “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Every one of us has things in our life that we desire. Things that we believe will make our life good, comfortable, pleasurable, productive, and ultimately give us a life we believe is worth living. Many of these desires can be good and right on target. But here’s the problem. There are times when what we desire can be very different from what God desires. What we want for us can be at odds with what God wants for us. This becomes real trouble when we change our desires into “demands” and then begin to evaluate God’s love for us based on what we think is best for us. If God doesn’t come through and deliver on our desires (now, our demands), then disappointment, discouragement, and disillusionment are not far behind. God has failed to meet our expectations for our ideal life and therefore at best doesn’t care, or at worst has abandoned us. These, of course, are complete lies of the Enemy of our souls. The answer? The instruction given to us in today’s Scripture. What we “delight” in will drive our desires. The God Who made us and loves us and wants good for us knows this, and knows exactly what we ultimately need. And so He tells us where to park our delight - in Him. As we do this our hearts become attached to the right and best desires for us. The one’s our Heavenly Father not only wants to give us, but promises to give us - “He will give you”. So today let’s ‘delight” ourselves in God. That invitation is really the ultimate gift.
